RS Summit

RS SUMMIT

A conference and workshop to bring together
residual stress measurement users and developers

Los Alamos, NM. December 10-11, 2003

About RS Summit

The goal this meeting is to develop a more cohesive residual stress community in North America. There will be several features, including user discussions of current problems, overview talks concerning residual stress, a hands-on workshop of current measurement techniques, and a planning session for a North American round robin of residual stress measurement.

Day One will give an overview of the RS industry from both the "practitioner" and "researcher" point of view. There will be several talks about RS problems in industry from a general standpoint (such as RS issues in welding, casting, forming, etc). Also, experts from industry will discuss current residual stress problems they are working on, and describe current challenges with measurement, analysis, etc.

Day Two will focus on discussions and demonstrations of measurement techniques. This is to provide an overview of the techniques available today, and how they are implemented. Currently, we have experts and systems that will be available for demonstration of X-ray diffraction, strain-gage hole drilling, ESPI hole drilling, Barkhausen noise, and ultrasonic measurement techniques. A highlight of the day will be a tour of the Los Alamos National Laboratory LANSCE neutron facility.

There will also be discussions of the current status of the North American RS round robin. This round robin is being supported by the Society for Experimental Mechanics, and we have previously settled on a part to be used as the test piece. At this meeting, we plan to gather input from those who have participated in round robins in the past, and take the next steps forward, which include identifying testing laboratories (or individuals) that are interested in participating in the round robin, and beginning the fabrication of the samples.

If you would like to attend the RS Summit, please print the registration form, then complete and and fax it to HYTEC at (505) 662-5179. If you have questions, or if you are interested in presenting a RS measurement technique or in demonstrating a piece of equipment (no sales presentations, please), contact Lisa Biehl at (505) 661-3000 x10. A modest registration fee is charged per participant to cover the cost of meeting rooms, printed materials, local transportation, conference banquet and catered lunches both days. For registration forms received by November 21, the fee is $200, and for later registration $250. After faxing your completed registration form, please mail it with your check to the address below.
